—Yo Haibara

Yo Haibara (灰原 耀) is a male character in Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.

Past[]

Yo was born to Shigeto and his wife a few years after the birth of their daughter, Sakuya. Sometime during his life his mother contracted Moonlight Syndrome and ultimately ended her life as a result. This event, as well as Sakuya contracting the same disease, led both Shigeto and Yo to search for a cure by any means necessary.

Reaching adulthood, Yo worked at a clinic in Tokyo, performing horrific experiments with patients that unfortunately lead to the deaths of several of them. Detective Choshiro Kirishima was assigned the case and Yo fled back home, admitting he would never return to the mainland due to his wanted status.

Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse[]

Once returning to the island, Yo began to help his father further his research on the illness and potential cure. The discovered the Rite of Descent, which they believed would cure Sakuya of her affliction.

The rite required a Vessel and Organs, same as the Rogetsu Kagura which was performed every 10 years. Yo took it upon himself to seek out and kidnap the Organs needed for the ritual. They had Sakuya be the Vessel, only for the rite to end with disastrous consequences, causing the deaths of the Rogetsu Kagura performers and leaving Sakuya in a comatose state.

Sakuya was placed underground and under surveillance, Yo stayed on the island, hoping his sister would awaken and they could all live peacefully. However, two years after the failed ritual, Sakuya awoke, completely bloomed and began to bloom anyone else who saw her. Yo went to the roof of the hospital, watching the disaster take place where he was found by Kirishima. Fed up with their “cat and mouse” game, Yo stabbed Kirishima in the side. In rage, Kirishima rushed into Yo and took them both over the railing, leading to their deaths.

Files Authored[]

Etymology[]

  • The name Yo means "to shine/shine, sparkle, gleam, twinkle, brilliance" (耀).
  • You's surname Haibara means "ash" (灰) (hai) and "field, plain" (原) (hara/bara).

Trivia[]

  • It's implied, but never proven, that Ayako is the daughter of Sakuya and Yo.
    • In one of his notebooks found in-game, Yo recalls his father noting that Ayako has the same interest in "excessive mischief" as Yo himself.
    • In an entry of Choushiro's handbook, the detective speculates that Yo's love for his sister went beyond that of siblings.
    • While it can also be interpreted as an intergenerational friendship or affection from an uncle (if she is indeed Sakuya's daughter), Yo was noted to have been very close with Ayako, to the point that Ayako hoped Yo would come save her from the Blooming that resulted from the failed ritual.
