Shoji Katagiri was the assistant of You Haibara. He helped You with his research on Luna Sedata Syndrome, became Misaki Asou's main doctor, and observed Sakuya Haibara, thought he considered her case of Luna Sedata Syndrome hopeless.
After some time, Shoji became troubled by the hospital's unsciencetific approach to curing the disease, and Haibara's unethical pratices. He felt remorse for the patients subjected to experimental treatments. Even so, Shoji was drawn to the island's Kiragou, after he saw the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. He was particularly impressed with Sakuya's calmness before the ceremony, and wanted to see her once more before she was masked.
After the festival, Shoji heard the echo of children's voice from the well outside the hospital. He believed the voices were of Ruka Minazuki, Madoka Tsukimori, Tomoe Nanamura, and Marie Shinomiya, the kidnapped girls who have been missing for more than a week. He contacted the mainland's police, asking that they investigate the hospital, which resulted in Choushiro Kirishima finding the kidnapped girls.
It is unknown what happened to Katagiri after that, but he remained on Rougetsu Island and died along with all the other natives and visitors on the Day without Suffering.
