—Sayaka Minazuki

Sayaka Minazuki (水無月 小夜歌 Minazuki Sayaka) is a female character in Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. She is the former wife of Souya Yomotsuki, the mother of Ruka Minazuki and a friend of Choushiro Kirishima who guides them both through the game.

Backstory[]

Born and raised on the island, Sayaka comes from a long line of healers known as Guardians. This practice had long ceased before her birth but many traditions were passed down such as the Moonsong and Guardian Mirror. In adulthood she married Soya, another islander from a prominent mask making family where they resided and in 1963 had their daughter Ruka.

Keeping with her traditions, she taught Ruka the piano and valued her family and the three lived peacefully for many years. However, Soya began to grow distant and obsessive over making a certain mask, which led to much fighting between the couple. Ruka also began to slowly show symptoms of Moonlight Syndrome which frightened Sayaka. This came to a head when she discovered her husband placing masks on their daughter which was triggering the illness. In desperation, she removed Ruka from the family home and had her hospitalized where they were placed in Rogetsu Hall.

During the Rogetsu Kagura of 1970, Ruka went missing and Sayaka went to detective Choshiro Kirishima, who was already on the island investigating Yo Haibara, to search for her missing daughter. Two weeks later, Ruka and the other missing girls were discovered in a moon lit cave hidden under the Haibara hospital. Overwhelmed with guilt for putting her daughter in such a situation, the two fled the island all together.

It wasn’t long after the move that Sayaka became ill, her body finally giving out from the pressure and stress it had been placed over the years. She warned her daughter to never return to the island, as some things are best left forgotten, but Ruka persisted anyway. Calling on her friend once again, she requested Choshiro to find Ruka and bring her home. She gives him a Spirit Stone Flashlight, telling him he will need it when he returns to the island.

While on the island, Ruka sees vision of her mother, memories of her teaching piano and welcoming her home. She helps Ruka find the Guardian Mirror so she may learn the true Moonsong and put an end to Sakuya’s blooming. Choshiro also recalls memories of Sayaka who tells him to find pieces of the broken mask and give them to Ruka as she will need them. Perplexed as to why, he does as she instructs.

However, Choshiro learns of his fate at the hands of Yo, and Sayaka appears, showing they have both been deceased for the past eight years.
