The Rite of Spirits is one of the many rituals performed in the Kuze Shrine in Fatal Frame III: The Tormented. Female tattoo artists are gathered from villages near the Kuze Shrine to become Engravers for the Piercing of the Soul Ceremony.
The Ritual
The Engravers gouge their eyes out to demonstrate their eternal stay in the Kuze Shrine and dedication. It increased their spiritual intuition, allowing them to discern the emotions of the red and indigo ink, and enabled them to engrave the tattoos on the Priestess without being led astray by sight. This also allowed them to witness the Priestess dreams even when they are awake.
Once the ritual is complete, the Engravers are capable of carrying out the Piercing of the Soul rite.
