Ose Kurosawa (黒澤 逢世 Kurosawa Ōse) is the main antagonist in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. She is a powerful hostile ghost.

Background[]

Originally from a small village on the other side of Katase, at the base of Mt. Hikami, she was the sole survivor of a flood that killed many people, and the incident left her with the ability to see things others couldn't, forcing her to take a position as a shrine maiden on the mountain. When her time came to enter the casket and become an Immortal Flower, it was decided that she would serve as a Great Pillar, supporting the mountain and preventing black water from overflowing from the Shadowspring. This was such a coveted honor that the other shrine maidens were in tears when she was chosen. The name Kurosawa (meaning "black swamp") was not her birth name, but one conferred as a sign of recognition when she was chosen for the role.

In preparation for her future Ghost Marriage, the residents of the mountain invited Kunihiko Asou, then a young man, to visit and take a photograph, which they thought might reflect the shrine maiden's soul more clearly than the traditional painting. Ose and Kunihiko were together only for a brief time as he took her picture, but fell in love instantly. He took her photograph with him and treasured it, as a memento and piece of her soul. Ose was troubled by her feelings, because rather than die and be joined in Ghost Marriage, she found herself wishing to live with him. She remained silent, and so the feelings between them remained unspoken and powerful.

Ouse-Kurosawa

Ose went on to perform her ritual, entering the casket willingly. Once the lid was closed, however, she was flooded with the feelings of all of the shrine maidens being massacred at that very moment by Kyozo Kururugi. Her memories of Kunihiko Asou only caused her more pain, and her ritual failed, black water spilling from inside her box. Her spirit was tainted, and she turned into an evil ghost, forever waiting for someone to die with, or accept her memories so she could be at rest.

Appearance[]

Ose wears a wedding kimono and hood decorated with spider lilies, with the kimono folded right side over left, in the same manner the dead are dressed. Unlike other corrupted spirits on the mountain, Ose appears black and rotting. Black water causes living flesh to necrotize, but those who are dying or have visited death can touch the water unharmed, becoming perfectly preserved. Ose may be too close to life to withstand the black water, causing her to rot. Once she has fully embraced death, her beautiful appearance is restored.

Possible causes for the failure[]

Some fan and canon theories for why Ose's sacrifice was a failure:

Rejection of the Role[]

Ose's crippling fear was being alone, and becoming a pillar meant eternal solitude, unless a ghost marriage partner could be found. Her desire to remain alive with Kunihiko, who would not be remaining with her in the casket, may have lead to rejecting her role and longing for life. She had never shown desire to be a shrine maiden, and was reluctant and weary at best about performing the duties of one, which may also have been a factor as she clung to life.

Ghost encounters with broken and twisted eternal flowers (which implies they were not willing, but had their limbs broken as they were forced into reliquaries) who have likewise become corrupt and escaped their boxes, implies some degree of willing acceptance is necessary for a successful pillar.

Massacre Final Glance[]

Whether this was experienced in real time during the killings, or simply the residual Fatal Glance of their spirits lingering on the mountain, at the moment of sacrifice, Ose was able to Glance and absorb the residual feelings of all the Mikomori shrine maidens murdered by Kyozo Kururugi, as well as Kyozo himself as he killed them. Having agreed to become a pillar because she was already at her limit, the additional Glance may have been too much for her to bear, causing the overflow. The knowledge and feeling of being completely alone, now that even her sister priestesses were gone, may have resulted in similar despair.

Photograph[]

Ose's wedding portrait contains a small piece of her soul, thanks to Kunihiko's special photography techniques. Her lack of completeness, or having a piece of her soul out in the living world, may have caused the failure.

Proximity to Life[]

Pillars must be between life and death in order to successfully form a bridge between the two and prevent death from overflowing. As indicated by her necrotized appearance, Ose may be clinging too closely to life to endure the black water and create a successful bridge.

Endings[]

Love After Death[]

If Ren chooses to embrace Ose, a sequence plays where Kunihiko's spirit is finally able to reunite with Ose. Startled by this and reverting to her form while still alive, she asks if he is here to close the matter, and Kunihiko responds by confessing his love her. Although Ose revealed that she was aware of his feelings from the moment they had contact, she was nonetheless happy to be given the knowledge she had longed to hear and disappears in Kunihiko's eyes.

Box of Loneliness[]

If Ren chooses to take a picture of Ose instead, she understands that this was his "goodbye". She admits that when the Camera Obscura took a picture of her, she had lost a portion of her soul and was tormented by pain but was still happy.

Before returning to the underworld, she asks "Kunihiko" to take one last picture of her in the her form prior to death.

Embrace[]

If Ose is defeated in the second time underwater, an ending where Yuri finally jumps off the cliff to console Ose in her loneliness will be achieved, with Ose telling her that she is not alone, leaving Hisoka on the cliff, forever puzzled as to why Yuri had to kill herself despite the efforts she put into consoling her.

Bride of Black Water[]

If Ose is defeated in her black bride form above the water, an ending where Yuri will see all the pain and suffering that Ose had been shouldering all this time and ends with Yuri hugging her while crying together will be achieved. For the first time in her life, Yuri had been able to cry for all the pain that the deceased had entrusted to her, she understood the weight of responsibility that the shrine maidens of Mt. Hikami undergo and also understood the purpose of her life. Ose then bids farewell and all the black water is drawn back into the Shadowspring with Yuri being left behind on the Lake of the Departed with Hisoka waiting for her.

In both the game's endings, Yuri Kozukata's sympathy for Ose manages to console her and lift the curse, putting her spirit at rest.

Battle[]

When the player encounters her, her surroundings are covered by blue miasma. There is nothing that can hurt her and the camera doesn't seem to affect her. Although she moves rather slow, she is able to teleport directly beside or behind the player and a single touch from her will cause an instant death. All the player has to do is to avoid getting close to her.

OuseFinal

At the end of the game, however, the player will have to fight her Yomi form, but will be allowed to hurt her with the camera this time. Ose is fast, she can hover in the air and has a tendency to teleport directly beside or behind the player, where she can quickly attack. She sometimes can also summon up to five Guardians. Fortunately, each Guardian has a targettable spot which is their head, so the player can take an easy Shutter Chance if they are not allowed to advance closely.

Once she is defeated and the player doesn't Glance her before she vanishes, she will regenerate her health, and this time she appears in her black bride form above water. In this stage, she acts more passively, instead focusing on summoning other spirits such as Twisted Guardians and Shadow-touched to her aid which can be defeated in a single hit. As normal shots still only deal minimal damage, even with more powerful upgrades and Films, it is best to take Fatal Frame shots of her summons with her included in the shot. When damaged sufficiently, she will release a great amount of Spirit Fragments to try and heal herself before immediately teleporting behind the Yuri and trying to grab her.

If she manages to grab the player, she'll summon Guardians to attack her. Unlike the other ghosts, her grab doesn't trigger the Shutter Chance, and she'll only release the player once all the Guardians are defeated. Additionally, her grab also has her move forward for a few seconds, so simply dodging is not enough, and it is actually safer for the player to exit the viewfinder and move backwards until she finally stops.

Once she is defeated a second time, the player must quickly get close to her and give her a Glance before she vanishes or she will regenerate her health again and appears as her dark bride form again.

Memo[]

Ose had exceptionally strong psychic abilities. She had been chosen to be drowned in the Shadowspring as the main Pillar of the faith.

So that she did not just disappear, she needed to enter into a Ghost Marriage. A votive picture was commissioned.

Rumors of Dr. Aso and his Camera Obscura, which could capture the subject's soul, had reached Mt. Hikami and so he was invited to take a photo of Ose. He fell in love with her, and she reciprocated. He then left the mountain, taking with him a fragment of Ose's soul trapped in the photograph.

As Ose was shut in the casket, still yearning for Dr. Aso, Kyozo Kururugi was killing the shrine maidens, releasing the pain and anguish that had taken from others. Those dark thoughts entered Ose, causing her casket to burst open and the Black Water to flow.

The mountain was consumed by the accursed waters. Ose, destined to endlessly relive those shrine maidens' last moments alone in the dark, withstood the pain for a time but she will not last much longer.

The protective seal surrounding the mountain has long been maintained by turning local girls into Pillars. Ose knows that she will soon fade, and so uses her powers to call to Yuri, a kindred spirit, and Ren, in whom part of Dr. Aso lives on.

Etymology[]

  • The name Ose means "meet, greet" (逢) (ou) and "world" (世) (se).
    • Shortly after the game's release, a few fandom sources claimed her name to be "Oose" (オオセ), a more common spelling of 逢世, but the official spelling, according to the title card of Chapter 7, is "Ouse." (オウセ). This was simplified to "Ose" in the Western release.
  • Ose's surname Kurosawa means "black" (黒) (kuro) and "marsh" (澤) (sawa).
