Past[]

Kaname Echo Stone Earring

Echo Stone Earring.

The Kuze family had strict rules, one including that male children be “cast out” before the age of four. It's implied this “cast out” was forcing them into a well to die. To spare her beloved son this fate, Kyouka made the risky decision to smuggle him out so he may live. She left him with one of the echo earrings as a final parting gift. She hoped that one day, Akito would find him and recognize the earring and take him in. However, unbeknownst to her, he had already been murdered by Yashuu Kuze, her mother.

He was adopted by the Ototsuki family in a neighboring village where he would grow up. Kaname was fully aware he was adopted, but still loved his family like his own. In his childhood, he would meet Reika where the two would become close. Reaching adulthood, he left for city to learn more about the region’s traditions as well as clues to his real parentage. Sometime during his absence, a disaster would hit the village, killing almost everyone. Reika, being one of the only survivors, volunteered to become the Tattooed Priestess due to the trauma and grief she suffered.

In his absence, Kaname would write letters to Reika, discussing anything he learned and keeping her up to date on his life. He slowly began to dream of a giant manor where he would see a beautiful woman with long black hair. He would be hit with powerful feelings of nostalgia, unaware that he had been there before. Then he began to hear Reika’s voice in his dreams and did everything he could to follow the voice.

During this time, he would meet Dr. Kunihiko Asou, who was researching the power of dreams. Kaname met with him a couple times, telling him about his dreams and the power they had. However, it was during one of his interview sessions, he was overcome with a feeling of dread and desperately needed to see Reika. Frantically, he returned home, leaving almost all of his possessions behind.

Returning home to find it gone, he was able to learn of Reika’s whereabouts and followed suit. He learned of the ceremony about to come at the shrine, he snuck in with the hopes of seeing Reika one last time. Kaname ran into Amane, a handmaiden, who quickly recognized him as her older brother thanks to the echo earring he possessed. Accepting his request for help, Amane brought him into the manor, hopeful that the two lovers would be reunited. Deept within the manor, Kaname finally found Reika, who was already impaled within the Chamber of Thorns and deep in sleep. Her eyes opened when she heard him enter. She smiled, finally at peace being able to see Kaname one last time. This joy between the two would be brief, as Yashuu had followed Kaname and stabbed him to death before Reika’s eyes. Upon seeing the death of her lover, her grief and pain she felt made tattoo enter her eyes, causing the Rift to open and spread of the Unleashing.

Once Rei Kurosawa defeats Reika many years later, she closes the priestess’s eyes, and casts the two in a boat so they may cross to other side together.
