Game Fatal Frame III: The Tormented

The Engraving Shrine was the focal point of the Kuze Shrine when it was operational. Worshipers came here to offer their pain, and it was here that Engravers engraved the tattoos onto the Priestess using Ink of the Soul in the Piercing of the Soul ritual. The Priestess was tattooed on a large stone bed, carved directly out of the rocky ground and surrounded by reed screens.

In front of the reed screens is an altar arranged with esoteric Buddhist equipment. The door to the Last Passage can be accessed through this room, after placing the Mirror of Loss on the pedestal on this altar.

There are two bodies in the Engraving Shrine, laid out on tables on either side of the room. They are covered with a cloth, pierced with needles and surrounded by candles. Their identity and purpose is unknown, but fans have speculated that they are the bodies of the two Engravers.

The Engraving Shrine also had upper levels. The highest appears to have been a storage room, containing a bookshelf and a medicine cabinet, and has a door opening out onto the roof of the Shrine. A ladder leads down to the rafters above main room. It is possible to walk across the rafters and observe what is happening below.

Shrine Courtyard[]

Originally, the Engraving Shrine was outdoors, and in several of the visions that the main characters have as they fall asleep, snow can be seen falling in the courtyard. Worshipers would make their way across the courtyard to offer their pain to the priestess. After the Unleashing, a great wooden structure was built around the shrine, sealing the entire area into a cavern and containing the Rift within. The courtyard contains two smaller shrine structures, one destroyed, and the front entrance of the Book Storeroom. A pool of water appears to well up from beneath the foundations of the Engraving Shrine.

Interactions[]

Hour 10: The Piercing of Soul[]

  • Miasma (in courtyard) - "What is this... The air... is so heavy... It's like some sort of "miasma"... I can feel something odd in the air around me. That which lies sealed within the "Manor of Sleep"... That which lies on the other side of the "Rift"... What could possibly be inside here... I've got to do something about this miasma..."
  • Pond - "There is a faint sound of running water in the open space that surrounds the shrine. Could this pond somehow be connected?"
  • Bookcase - "On the bookcase is a row of books about Shinto. It doesn't look like there's anything special here."
  • Medicine drawer - "There is a medicine chest covered in dust. I looked inside a few of the drawers, but all the medicine or whatever it is has gone rotten and turned black."
  • Two bodies underneath cloth - "On top of the platform is a cloth stuck with needles. Could that be... a body under the cloth...?"
  • Sealed screen - "I tried to open the screen, but it is held fast and there is no way I can get it to budge... Inside the screens is what looks like a stone bed. At the other end I can see a door that leads further into the shrine."
  • Altar - "There is a wood burner on the altar and a few other items used in esoteric Buddhist rituals. In the center is a pedestal for some kind of circular board or plate. Something is carved into the pedestal in small script. "Offer up the Mirror - Etched with the Holly of the Priestess."

Hour 11: The Last Passage[]

  • Altar - "The altar is arranged with braziers and other equipment used in esoteric Buddhist rituals. In the center lays a pedestal meant to hold a round plate of some sort. There is a small engraving on it: "Offer up the Mirror - Etched with the Holly of the Priestess." You set the "Mirror of Loss" on the pedestal. There was a sound from the bamboo screen in the back. It seems the device that was holding the screen in place has been released..."
  • Altar #2 - "There is a wood burner on the altar, along with several other items used in esoteric Buddhism. On the pedestal in the center of the altar is an old mirror."
  • Behind the screen - "Inside the screens, the bare rock beneath the floor is exposed, it looks like the stone bed in the center was carved straight out of the rock. Looking closely at the stone bed, I can make out traces of red and purple ink. It looks like a tattooing ceremony took place here."

Hour 12: The Ceremony of Commandment[]

  • Upon entering - "Impale the priestess... to subdue... The "tattoo stakes"... must be somewhere within the mansion..."
